Knightia excelsa: susceptability

Hello, Over the decades I have attempted to grow rewarewa in Blenheim but without success. Upon purchasing and planting the seedlings, they may survive two or three seasons and subsequently perish; this is not due to frost, drought, or over-watering. The plants seem to become stunted in growth, the leaves gradually turning brown; buds may burst but the new leaves remain small. There are enough adult examples of rewarewa around Blenheim to convince that location is not the issue. I have tried fungal and insecticide sprays though without effect. Are there any pertinent suggestions or advice out there?
