Help ID this plant please

Found growing in abundance in Dairy Flat, Auckland.
Red trunk, maximum thickness seems to be about 5cm. Mostly green leaves, but leaves turn red at the tips of the branches. Also some spotted red dots on some of the green leaves. Maximum height from what I can see is only about 2 meters.
Grows out from tree stumps.
No idea what this plant could be. (sorry for the poor photo, I had to crop it down to fit the 500kb limit)

Reminds me of monkey apple, especially if it is resprouting from stumps

Myrtaceae, Syzygium - possibly S. paniculatum or S. australe
